GES to consider parents who do not want their ward in SHS boarding house

The Director-General for the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa says the Education Service is yet to put measures in place for parents who for any reason do not want their child (final year student) to be admitted in Senior high school boarding house ahead of the June 22 schools reopen.

President Nana Akufo-Addo in his 10th televised address to the nation on Sunday, May 31 announced for schools to be reopened to only final year students in the country effective June 15 to enable them to complete their academic year and proceed to sit for the forthcoming examinations.

Following the reopening of schools for SHS final year students, the Minister for Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has directed all Heads of schools with a boarding house to admit final year day students as boarders as part of measures to slow the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus that has at least claimed the lives of 34 people in the country.

However, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in an interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show monitored by Georgeweb.org said: “concerning the admitting of final year day students as boarders the Service will put measures in place for parents who for some reason do not want their children to be in the boarding house”.

He said this responding to a question asked by host Kwame Sefa Kayi if all day students are now borders, the Professor in reply said “apart from the 184 schools that are purely day schools the rest is to admit final year day students into the boarding house”.

He said as part of COVID-19 safety measures students in day school temperature would be mandatory checked regular, adding that Senior high schools across the country will be provided a temperature gun for the compulsory checking process.

According to Mr. Opoku Amankwa, one temperature gun will at least be given to each senior high school in the country, according to him they are still in a tete-a-tete with the government to increase the number of temperature guns for each school.
