General Arts is one of the most popular courses taught in senior high schools across Ghana, which has over the years seen more enrollments than any other course or programme.

It deals with the humanities (also referred to as the social sciences). The elective subjects taught deal predominantly with issues, life, and the culture of society and country.

The subjects span from broad areas such as governance, politics, journalism and media, social life etc.

Future Study Path:

Having successfully completed SHS taking General Arts, you are more likely to pursue further study in university or any tertiary institutions in the following:

• Geography
• Sociology 
• Journalism, communication, and media studies
• Philosophy and classics 
• Performing art and theatre studies

There is a host more. These will largely determine your carry path as well, though not always the case. As it is possible for a General Arts student to pursue nursing after SHS.

Science is defined in several meaningful ways. However, as a course in Senior High School, General Science involves the study of the natural phenomenon through a systematic approach of science: hypothesis, experiments, observation, and arriving at some logical conclusions. 

General Science as a course also involves the study and application of technology (ICT in general).

Depending on each school's capacity, various combinations of the elective subjects are made for students grouped into various classes. For example, in some schools, Geography is part of General Science electives.

Future Study Path:

A student who completes SHS having studied science can further his/her studies in varied areas including:

Home Economics courses are offered around the world and across multiple educational levels. Historically, the purpose of these courses was to professionalize housework, to provide intellectual fulfillment for women, and to emphasize the value of "women's work" in society and prepare them for traditional gender roles.

There are several career paths studying Home Economics and its related elective subjects. These include professional catering services, hospitality services, nursing, etc.

In senior high, the course also involves a series of practical course works to enhance students' appreciation of concepts.

Course Description

The visual arts create works that are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, film making, and architecture. These definitions should not be taken too strictly as many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types.

With the use of the computer and software, visual arts has extended the set of tools available to students to be more creative. The application of the computer extends the course to cover applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design, and decorative art.

The current usage of the term "visual arts" includes fine art as well as the applied, decorative arts and crafts, but this was not always the case. 

Visual Arts as a senior high school course has several elective combinations depending on each school's capacity and resources.
